Task 2 - Oppotunities: Creation of tone

Image
In this ITV2 TV advert the tone is clear to see with the character from ITV's Love island. The use of one of the cast of Love Island being used to create the tone is appropriate for their target audience which is 16-34. The effectiveness of the tone allows the audience to read off the linguistic register which they use and that is super informal, they use cheeky actions to entice the audience to come and watch the shows as well as branding themselves with a popular tv programme such as Love Island to remind their customers/ viewers about the popular show and using the cast from the show, whom are in beach wear and with good bodies to draw the audience in. In this BBC TWO ident we see a simple '2' figure which has shaggy fur and is the only and main feature on the show. The lingusitic register is formal, calm and boring.

Task 2 - Oppotunities: Branding of content

Image
Branding of content Comedy central uses their ident with the show 'Impractical Jokers'. They do this because they're using their most successful show to be broadcasted as their idents between adverts so that the audience can see a popular show which is on Comedy central and this is a way which will draw them in and entice them to watch more shows on this channel. The on-screen graphic representation enables an opportunity to create brand awareness and loyalty from new and existing customers. for new customers, what is going to grasp them is the aims of the channel, its missions and values and then the duty lies within the ident to transmit the values it carries, over a long period of time so that the new consumers and viewers become loyal. The loyal viewers are responsible for keeping high vewing numbers and frequency of views.

Task 2 - Opportunities: Display of text based information

Image
E4 Graphic representation E4's graphic representation gives opportunities to those who may have any impaired hearing or eye sight by featuring their own version of a time-table as part of the transition to the next channel. The font of the channels as they roll through the time slots are large and bold, which is clear enough for a viewer to see and they also have an audio voice over which is clear for the viewer to see so that everyone is being catered for on their channel. Sky TV Guide This is Sky's TV Guide and they have every channel which is available on Sky, with the channels being numbered. This is a way in which the audience can see exactly what is on and at what time but in comparison to the E4 graphic representation, it is a lot more challenging for those who do not know how to use a TV guide properly, the text is much smaller and difficult for those whom are visually impaired and unlike on the E4 channel requires you to prompt yourself to look and what is sch...

Task 2 - Understanding the opportunities and limitations of on-screen graphic representation

E4 Idents                                                                                      E4 often uses comical Idents due to the fact that they are an entertaining channel and broadcast programmes suitable for age ranges between 15-28 and i believe that their idents fit to their ethos and audience. In the reception theory, i think that they suit the ' preferred reading' because the audience can clearly see and agree with their idents for being entertaining and random and a little bit crude which suits the channel perfectly. i agree with this channels focus and i think the preffered reading goes with the coperate identity which slots into the category correctly.

Purpose: Scheduling

An ident plays an important role when it comes to keeping a channel’s schedule organised. It is a way of keeping the programmes which are due to commence on a roll and kept relating. An ident is an ideal opportunity to provide the audience with key information about programming on that channel. It also gives them an insight of what the channel consists of, the age range of the channels which are aired and the quality of the programmes. For example ITV's idents are glossy, cute, funny and appeal mostly wo women and this matches with the shows which they air on ITV such as The Real Housewives of Atlanta, Orange County etc, Dinner Date, Cake Wars and Love Island. the target audience This information may entice the viewer to continue watching that particular channel rather than switching over to another channel. Stacking is a scheduling tool that places two of the same or similar shows on after another. An ident can inform the audience of this to maintain audience flow.

Purpose: Packaging and Re-Packaging

BBC have recently changed their ident and have repackaged their look. Idents serve as an anchor of meaning that reflects their ethos. BBC most recently changed their idents to reflect their fourth and new ethos of celebrating cultural diversity. They responded to this change by repacking their idents away from their circular branding to spaces in the UK that celebrates diversity.

Purpose: Marketing

Marketing is a form of promotion, the action or business of promoting and selling products or services, including market research and advertising. Idents serve as a method of promoting both the channel as a service and the ‘goods’ it ‘sells’. A successful ident will help promote a programme i.e. E4’s Eefer is a clever way of marketing Big Bang Theory, E4’s most popular show, as they utilise the theme of robotics seen in BBT in the ident itself. This clear attempt of synergy was made even clearer given that the robot was first show alongside the release of Big Bang Theory on E4. Another example of a channel which an ident that's marked a show is

Purpose: Branding

Purpose - Branding Branding isn’t just a visual experience. The sound of a TV ident can help build identification with a channel and serve as a comforting signal that your favourite show is about to start. It is there to allow an audience to familiarise a channel and make it distinguishable by an audience.  A successful campaign will run a series of idents, creating personalities within those idents will continue a companies ethos and ideology. The branding will be a direct link to the recognition of the audience in choice of colour, style, themes and purpose. The banding will use the success of the channel and choose something recognisable to the audience and something popular. For example the Sky Sports channel shows a football game in the background and the reasons why they would do this is because they know it’s a sports channel and they have to fit their target audience and in the UK the most popular sport is Football so that is purposeful branding. channel 4 includes an a...

Purpose: Identity

An example of a channel which believes that identity is important is BBC, BBC One to be precise. They understand that we are living in, they understand the importance of creating identities and BBC campaigned to create new idents to make it stand out from the crowd. They have explained how the cirlce has always been a successful point within BBCs idents and they have stuck to that thus creating new versions and introducing more dynamic and attractive idents. They like to include things which you wouldnt see everyday such as the fantasical image of adult hippos swimming. This can be seen as a metasphor of new ideas, things you could have never imagined before being showcased on BBC and this gives the audience a tasteful mouthful of something new. Tim davie quotes " The strength of the idea is its simplicity. It creates an identity for BBC ONE that is absolutely true to its heritage but it's wonderfully modern."

Design led - entertainment led

ITV will be more inclined to use an entertaining style of ident because they're a commercial channel and their ethos eans towards entertainment and we see this through the pug being washed on the kitchen sink and there is no voiceover it is simply a dog being washed and the simplicity makes it applealing and entertaining for the audience.

Design - Density of information

Image
Density of information In this E4 ident advert, we can see the density of information if large. the entire advert consists of the 'character ident' which is holding up a sign which says 'eat my baps' which is something the younger generation would use as an abbreviation for maybe something a little cruder and they would find it comical therefore the channel seemingly becomes relevant and relatable. The drawing of breast on the canvas is also something quite silly and appealing for the younger generation as it draws them in to things which they find funny or exciting and this is how, in my opinion, E4 makes their target audience obvious; along with the use of an animal such as a small dog makes the advert seem less formal and more relaxed and shows that the programmes shown on this channel will be varieties of genres and will appeal to a younger generation. this advert is more informative and gives you more of an idea of what will be broadcasted on the channe...
